Screening of “The Invisible War”

Amnesty International Pitt presents:

Help end sexual assault in the military

Join Us for a Free Showing of the
Award Winning Documentary
“The Invisible War”
Monday, November 25
7:30 to 9:00 pm
University of Pittsburgh
Cathedral of Learning – Room 306
4200 Fifth Avenue (Oakland)

To get more involved in the local organizing effort to protect our defenders – join the “Stop Sexual Assault in the Military” planning group by emailing Ginny at Hildebrew@aol.com or call (412) 361-3022.

Democrats like Carl Levin and Claire McCaskill are teaming up with Republicans to kill Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s bill which will place military sexual assault prosecution into the hands of prosecutors, and not the military commanders who have failed to address this issue for years.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has built a huge coalition across the political spectrum to support this bill, but she’s still just shy of the 60 votes needed to break the filibuster.

Many of America’s allies around the world have in place systems similar to what Sen. Gillibrand is proposing.

The only thing stopping us from getting this legislation passed is opposition from the military and its powerful lobby of legislators on Capitol Hill.

There were 26,000 sexual assaults in the military last year! In 2011 alone, incidences of documented sexual assault increased 35%.

Amnesty International Pittsburgh’s Human Rights Festival Dec 9th!!

UPDATE: Thank you to all of the organizations who attended tonight and all of the performers: Robin Clarke, Josh Zelesnick, R.B. Mertz, Vanessa German and City of Asylum writer-in-residence Yaghoub Yadali; City Council member Corey O’Connor; all letter writers, and all the volunteers that helped make tonight a successful event leading into Human Rights Day week events!

We wrote at least 550 letters tonight!!!
We have many members writing from home and a few more that might float in over the next few days, so I’d say we got close to 600 letters written at this year’s write-a-thon/Human Rights Festival!!

THANK YOU!

REMINDER: We are hosting an informal Human Rights Happy Hour after the Festival on December 12th from 5:30-8:30 pm at Sharp Edge Beer Emporium at 302 S St Clair Street in Friendship. All are welcome to attend for updates following the Festival and to relax and have fun!
